If you remember these handy tips when you are thinking of purchasing new software or hardware, you cannot really go wrong:

1. Always, always make sure it will work on your computer! There is no point in buying something that won’t work for you!


2. Make sure that you are buying from a well-known store or website!


3. Double-check that the box is sealed and has not been tampered with in any way!


4. If ordered over the internet, and has been defaced, or has obvious signs of tampering upon arrival, contact the retailer IMMEDIATELY! Do not wait!


5. Check for Holograms – Don’t settle for watermarks, as they are very easily replicated. ‘Most’ software manufacturers print holograms instead onto their products, as they are much more difficult to manufacture. These are used purely as a sign of authenticity. If the software also requires a ‘Key-Code’ or ‘Product Key’ for its continual use, make sure it has one, as they should always come with one!


6. Make sure you get a receipt, or are able to print a ‘Hard Copy’ purchase confirmation from the retailer as proof of purchase, if bought over the internet!

New/Used PC Setup

If you have just bought a new PC, and either don’t know, or don’t have the time to put it all together and get it just the way you want it, give us a call, and we will be able to give you an on the spot, no obligation quotation for your requirements.

We don’t just plug it in, turn it on, put your name into it and say it’s done, there is so much more to it then that!

We would set up your new PC so that it blends into your personality and lifestyle as much as possible.

We would attach all your existing peripherals such as monitors, keyboards, printers, speaker systems etc, and make sure they are all compatible with your new PC.

We would install all your existing software that you are already familiar with, transfer all your old files from your old machine to the new one. We would also enable it for internet/network connection at home and/or work if applicable. We may even recommend new software or specific upgrades for your machine which we think would suit you and your new investment very well, such as New Word Processing Software, Web Browsers, Media Players and Image viewers!

Home Wireless Installation

Wireless Networks can sometimes be very complicated. It is of the upmost importance that you know what is connected to your network, where, when, how, why and are these connections safe 100% of the time?

The illustration below shows a simple network map of hardware that is connected together into a Wireless LAN Infrastructure. Everything is connected via a wireless Hub or Router. If the router is not working safely and properly, it can affect everything else on your network.

In order to set up a Wireless Home Network, there are some key points that you must remember. You must have the correct hubs or routers that will support all your devices, and you have a strong security software application installed on the core parts of the network (routers, hubs, servers etc)! Failing this, you will literally be advertising yourself 'across the world' for malicious activity to take place on your network.

This activity can start working against you, even before you find out its on your network, and it may be too late! Viruses, Spyware, or even 'Hackers' etc can route through your network, and infect almost everything they come into contact with, corrupt/delete and even steal files and programs, rendering them completely unusable to you! So it is very important that you have network security!

When we are hired to set up a wireless network, we literally do everything for you, but if we uncover problems which require further work, we will not attempt to fix it without your permission, as it may take longer than initially expected, and may require new parts or software!

Computer Checkup & Clean

Here at Cortland Computers, we have a HUGE library of diagnostics and evaluation software, you would be spoilt for choice! When you order a Checkup and Clean with us, your system files will be tidied up and organized, your storage media (hard drives) defragmented, freeing up much more room to store things on. As well as a few other things, we give it a good deep cleaning. Inside as well as out!

Whilst your PC is under diagnostic, we run specific checks for viruses, spyware and other harmful threats. If we find any, we will contact you straight away, inform you of their nature and intentions, and speak with you over the options available to you with us, to get them removed and stay off your system!

When your system is finished, it will look, feel and most importantly, run as good as new.

As mentioned above in the last section, here at Cortland Computers, have an extensive library of diagnostics software to analyse your system with. So if there is a problem that doesn't want to be found with conventional scanners, we will find it with OUR software!

Viruses & Spyware

Of course, most virus creators don't realize that they are causing real damage to real people with their creations. Destroying everything on a person's hard disk is real damage. Forcing a large company to waste thousands of hours cleaning up after a virus is real damage. Even a silly message is real damage because someone has to waste time getting rid of it. For this reason, the legal system is getting much harsher in punishing the people who create viruses, but it can't stop them from being created or even distributed.

Millions of computers across the globe have at some stage been affected by a virus and some mechanisms contained in a virus have led them to spread them to other computers to which they may or may not be connected to. Once you know how a virus is spread and the damage it can cause, only then will you become more aware that Firewalls and Anti-Virus software is a must!

1. Act quickly, but don't forget security.
2. Try not to use any floppy disks, memory sticks, or any other kind of external media on the infected system.
3. Quarantine all external media that has been attached to the infected computer.
4. If possible, disconnect the infected computer from any networks simply by unplugging the Cat 5 Ethernet Cable.
